PAINTINGS OVER THE PAST DECADE
My landscapes have always been centred on changing weather with the visual emphasis on transitory experience.
The oil paintings on linen, canvas and panel, are dominated by the sky which is my spiritual as well as my artistic inspiration. I love the way the sky can change; calm summer evenings with clear skies transform into moonlit cloudscapes, while stormy nights resolve in brilliant sunrises.
Much of my work draws inspiration from the poet, Dorothea Mackellar and her poem, ‘My Country’, which so aptly describes every aspect of how the weather impacts on the Australian environment and its inhabitants. As the oldest and driest continent on earth, Australia has always been the focus of extreme weather. It is, as Mackellar states, ‘a wilful, lavish land’. To this end, I choose to create works which constitute a dichotomy; they draw attention to the severity of the weather resulting from climate change, while at the same time, celebrate the beauty and fragility of the landscape needing to be protected.
